Peer Review
Peer review is an instructional and assessment strategy in which students evaluate and provide feedback on one another’s work according to clearly defined criteria and rubrics.
Self-assessment enables students to check how well they have understood the material and to evaluate the outcomes of their own learning. It helps them identify what they have mastered and which areas still require further work. This awareness brings structure to the learning process and directs attention to specific issues, rather than leaving students to focus on the material as a whole. Self-assessment also serves as a form of revision and knowledge reinforcement. Recalling information and trying to reproduce it activates cognitive processes that support memory and understanding. It also provides immediate feedback, helping students decide what to focus on next.
At its core, self-assessment is about students checking their own understanding, rather than being assessed by someone else. Because it has no impact on the final grade, it encourages greater honesty and reduces the tendency to adjust answers simply to improve the result. As a result, students develop critical thinking skills, learn to plan their studies more effectively, and become more aware of how to use their own knowledge and skills.
Effective self-assessment is concise, focused, and clearly linked to a specific area of study. Short sets of questions usually work best, as they allow students to evaluate their understanding quickly. The number and difficulty of the questions should reflect the learning objectives and the stage of the learning process.
The questions should approach the same topic from different angles, such as definitions, applications, analysis, or calculations. This helps prevent students from simply memorising answers. Using varied question types and drawing questions from a larger pool can also make self-assessment more reliable.
Self-assessment is most valuable when used regularly. It enables students to monitor their progress, return to more challenging topics, and evaluate whether changes in their learning strategies are effective. It can also be strengthened by adding a short reflective element, in which students identify what they found difficult and plan their next steps.
One of the most common problems is treating self-assessment as a minor add-on simply because it does not affect the final grade. As a result, students may complete it superficially or skip it altogether. It is therefore important to explain its purpose clearly and show how it can help students achieve better learning outcomes.
Another frequent mistake is poor question design. Questions that are too general or too simple do not allow students to evaluate their understanding meaningfully, while questions that are not suited to their level may lead to frustration and discouragement. Well-designed questions should reveal how students think and encourage them to approach a topic from different perspectives.
A further challenge is a lack of learning skills. Students may not know how to use the results of self-assessment to guide their further work. In such cases, brief guidance or a short reflective element can help them turn their results into concrete next steps.
Self assessment also loses value when it is used only occasionally. Its strength lies in regular use and in the opportunity to return to more difficult topics. When well designed and used consistently, self-assessment becomes a tool that genuinely supports development and builds responsibility for one’s own learning.
