Decision Lab
Decision Lab is structured around making a collective decision in a situation where there is no single obvious answer and the available information is incomplete, contradictory, or ambiguous.

Best for: deepening understanding and developing explanation and collaboration skills
Peer learning is based on the assumption that teaching others is one of the most effective ways of learning. During peer learning activities, students must organise their knowledge, explain it in their own words, choose appropriate examples and check whether others gen-uinely understand what they are trying to communicate. A student who can clearly explain a concept to others usually understands it more deeply themselves.
However, avoid reducing peer learning to an informal conversation without a clear purpose, as it is very easy to focus too much on overly general issues. In such cases, the method loses its value because it does not lead to deeper understanding. Its effectiveness depends on a well-designed task that requires something specific: explaining a concept, making a decision, solving a problem, preparing instructions, comparing perspectives or applying knowledge in practice.
It can take many forms, from short pair work and explaining concepts in small groups to more complex tasks in which students prepare materials for others. It also works well in combination with other methods, such as Jigsaw Classroom, case studies or project-based learning.
Course: Business Analysis
Topic: Data Interpretation and Drawing Conclusions
Students work with a dataset of sales figures taken from a real business context, covering several months of activity in an e-commerce company. The data include information on sales across different channels, customer segments and product categories. The problem is not straightforward, as the sales results are inconsistent: some indicators suggest growth, while others point to decline.
Introduction (10 min)
The teacher presents the business context and explains that the aim of the task is to understand the meaning of the data and translate it into business decisions. They emphasise that students will work not only on drawing conclusions, but also on learning how to communicate them clearly to others. Each student receives a different part of the data or a different aspect of the analysis, meaning that the full picture of the situation will only emerge once the perspectives are combined.
Individual Work (15 min)
Students analyse their assigned part of the data, trying to identify key patterns and relationships. They determine what follows from the data, what may explain the observed trends and what business decisions could be considered on this basis. At this stage, they prepare a short explanation that is understandable to others and grounded in specific observations.
Learning From One Another (15 min)
Students work in small groups, where each person presents their analysis and explains their conclusions. The others actively ask questions, request clarification and try to understand the logic behind the reasoning. As the discussion develops, different interpretations emerge, requiring students to justify their claims and confront them with alternative perspectives. The group gradually builds a shared understanding of the situation by combining partial information into a coherent whole.
Integrative Task (10 min)
Based on all the analyses, the team prepares a joint business recommendation, e.g. concerning a change in sales strategy, marketing budget allocation or product priorities. The decision must be justified and refer to the data presented by all team members. Students must decide which information is most important and which is less relevant, requiring them to select and prioritise the data.
Presentation (10 min)
Teams present their recommendations, explaining their reasoning and justifying their decisions. The teacher asks questions about the logic behind their conclusions, points out inconsistencies and encourages comparison between the different approaches taken by the teams.
Easier → Provide clear instructions, guiding questions and a limited scope of material.
More Challenging → Introduce complex problems, ambiguous data and require students to justify their decisions.
Formative Assessment
The teacher uses peer learning as an opportunity to develop students’ ability to explain concepts and learn from one another. After an initial explanation, students are asked to check each other’s understanding, for example through paraphrasing, a checking question, or an example demonstrating the application of the concept. The teacher then provides brief developmental feedback, indicating which aspects of the explanation were clear, what requires further clarification, and how the explanation could be improved.
Summative Assessment
Assessment focuses on an individual task completed after the peer-learning activity, such as applying the concept to a new situation or responding to a problem-based question. Assessment criteria include the accuracy of understanding, the ability to apply knowledge independently, the effective use of insights gained through peer learning, and the clarity of the final conclusion.
