Source Auditing

Why Use It

Source auditing involves comparing different types of material on the same issue, such as academic articles, industry reports, statistical data, and online content. Students examine, among other things, who authored the material, what data it draws on, when it was produced, and what purpose or context may have shaped its creation. This method helps students develop a critical and responsible approach to information, as well as the ability to assess its quality, reliability, and usefulness in decision-making. It strengthens resilience to misinformation and supports evidence-based reasoning. Its key element is the deliberate use of clear criteria for evaluating sources, including the credibility of the author, the currency and relevance of the data, the transparency of the methodology, and the presence of supporting evidence. In this way, students learn to distinguish reliable materials from those that merely appear convincing. The teacher’s role is to moderate discussion, ask probing questions, and ensure that conclusions are grounded in arguments rather than intuition. The method prepares students to work with information in real research, business, and social contexts, where the ability to evaluate data quality is essential.

Practical Example

Course: Business Analysis
Topic: Evaluating Information Sources for New Market Entry Decisions
Students act as the analytics team of a medium-sized service company considering entry into a new European market. The company’s management expects a preliminary analysis based on available data on the market, customers, and competitors.

Warm-Up (10 min)
The teacher asks students: How can we tell whether information is credible? Students first write down three criteria that, in their view, indicate the reliability of a source. They then compare their answers in pairs and agree on a shared list of the most important criteria.

Source Audit (20–25 min)
Each team receives a set of 4–5 sources relating to the same market, for example:
• an industry report,
• an academic article,
• a blog post or expert article,
• statistical data,
• marketing material or a consultancy presentation.

The team assesses each source against the agreed criteria, such as authorship, methodology, currency of data, purpose of publication, and whether the information can be verified through other sources. Students record their observations and prepare a brief credibility assessment for each material.

Comparison and Discussion (15–20 min)
Teams present the results of their audit on a shared board or in a collaborative document. The teacher moderates the discussion by asking: Which sources provide the most useful data? Which are the least reliable, and why? Do the different materials lead to similar or conflicting conclusions? The aim of this stage is to show that not all information has the same value in decision-making.

Decision-Making Conclusions (10–15 min)
Each team identifies two sources on which it would base a recommendation to enter the market, as well as one source it would deliberately reject, justifying its decision with reference to the previously agreed evaluation criteria.

Reflection (5 min)
At the end, participants briefly answer the following question in writing: Which evaluation criterion proved most important, and why?

A short discussion helps summarise how conscious assessment of information quality influences business decision-making.

When It Works Best

When It Should Be Avoided

  • In very short classes where there is no time for discussion.
  • When students do not yet have basic subject knowledge.

Challenges

  • Students assess sources superficially → require them to justify every judgement.
  • Students place too much trust in sources that look professional → encourage them to cross-check information against other reliable sources.

Adjust the Level

Easier → Provide students with a ready-made checklist of evaluation criteria.
More Challenging → Ask students to evaluate conflicting sources and justify why they consider one more reliable than the others.

How to Assess

Formative Assessment
During the activity, observe how students apply source evaluation criteria, justify their decisions, and distinguish reliable information from content that is uncertain, biased, or insufficiently supported by evidence. Provide brief feedback and ask a probing question, for example: Which source was the most misleading, and why?

Summative Assessment
Students prepare a short audit report that includes an evaluation of the analysed sources, a justification of the criteria applied, identification of the most and least reliable sources, and a recommendation for decision-making. Assessment may focus on the accuracy of source evaluation, the quality of the justification, the ability to identify information-related risks, and the practical usefulness of the recommendation.
