Why Use It

Learning stations are an active learning method in which students work at several stations, each containing a different task related to the topic being studied. Student groups rotate between the stations and complete the assigned activities in turn. Each station may focus on a different aspect of the topic, such as analysing an example, interpreting data, working on a short case study, discussing a problem-based question, or completing a creative task. This approach encourages students to engage with the material in a variety of ways, promoting a deeper understanding of the topic. It also introduces movement and shifts in perspective during class, which can help increase student engagement. Rather than completing one long activity, students work through several shorter tasks that require discussion, decision-making, and collaborative problem-solving.
Task stations are particularly effective in workshop-style classes, revision sessions, and activities involving the exploration of complex issues from multiple perspectives.

Topic: Strategies for Reducing the Carbon Footprint in Enterprises

Introduction (10 min)
The teacher briefly introduces the concept of the carbon footprint and presents examples of measures companies take to reduce CO2 emissions. The teacher then explains the rules of the task station activity and divides students into small groups.

At Station Work (40 min)
Four stations are set up around the classroom, each featuring a different task related to carbon reduction strategies.
Station 1: Example Analysis
Students analyse a description of a manufacturing company and identify which measures could most effectively reduce its carbon footprint.
Station 2: Data Interpretation
Each group receives a short dataset on CO2 emissions across different areas of a company’s operations and identifies where emission reductions could have the greatest impact.
Station 3: Strategic Decision-Making
Students consider several possible investments, such as renewable energy, transport changes, or production modernisation, and decide which option should be prioritised.
Station 4: Solution Design
Groups propose one specific measure that a company could implement in the coming years to reduce CO2 emissions. After approximately 10 minutes, groups rotate to the next station and continue with the following task.

Summary and Reflection (5 min)
At the end of the activity, the teacher reviews the main conclusions from each station. Students share their observations, and the teacher highlights how different strategies can complement one another in business practice.

When It Works Best

  • When the material can be analysed from multiple perspectives.
  • In classes that involve discussion and collaborative problem-solving.
  • When the topic can be divided into several smaller components.
  • When the aim is to actively apply knowledge in practice.

When It Should Be Avoided

  • When the group is too small for several stations to be practical.
  • When the topic requires a longer theoretical introduction.
  • When the room does not allow students to move around freely.

Challenges

  • Organising the activity may be time-consuming → prepare tasks in a simple, clear format.
  • Students may focus on completing the task rather than understanding it → include questions that require them to justify their answers.
  • Moving between stations may cause organisational disruption → clearly define the time for each task and the order of rotation between stations.

Adjust the Level

Easier → Prepare short tasks with a single correct answer or a simple case study analysis.

More Challenging → Introduce tasks that require interpreting data, evaluating different strategies, or proposing original solutions.

Tips

  • Each station should contain one clearly defined task.
  • Tasks should be achievable within a short time frame (5–10 minutes).
  • Use a variety of activities, such as example analysis, problem-based questions, data interpretation, or short reflection tasks.
  • Always include a whole-class discussion of the results at the end of the session.

How to Assess

Formative Assessment

Station work can be used to assess students’ thinking processes and provide formative feedback. The teacher can observe group discussions and comment on the solutions proposed by students.

Summative Assessment

Assess the final assignment, such as a report, recommendation, or brief case analysis, in which students integrate insights and conclusions from all stations.
